The report also identified several factors that can reduce the cost of a data breach. Most importantly, a rapid breach response dramatically reduces overall costs.
- The first step to lowering the cost of a breach is to form an incident response (IR) team.
- Companies that formed an IR team, developed an IR plan, and tested that plan, reduced their breach costs by an average of $1.23 million.
- The average time from breach to discovery was 279 days. Companies that identified and remediated the breach inside 200 days saved an average of $1.2 million.
